Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same signalling language the body already uses to tell tissue to repair, calm down, or rebuild. Most of the work below comes from laboratory and animal research plus veterinary case experience, not large controlled dog and cat trials. Here’s the honest map of where they’re being explored. Why the copper caution matters. Cats metabolise some compounds very differently from dogs. GHK-Cu is a copper-carrying peptide, and feline patients — especially seniors, who often carry kidney or liver disease alongside their joint problem — get an individual risk review before anything copper-containing is considered. This is one of several reasons a licensed vet, not a website, decides the protocol.

Pain control, not repair. Ask your vet about current safety reporting and whether your pet is a good candidate.

Low risk and easy to add. Omega-3 fatty acids have the better evidence of the common options.

Effects are modest, onset is slow, and product quality varies enormously between brands.

Rehab & hydrotherapy

Builds the muscle that protects the joint. Genuinely changes function, not just comfort.

Takes time, access to a facility, and money. Under-used relative to how well it works.

Surgery

Definitive for structural problems — a ruptured cruciate isn’t going to be talked out of it.

Invasive, expensive, real recovery period, and not every patient is a candidate.

Peptides (us)

Targets the repair and inflammation signalling underneath the symptom. Used as an adjunct to the rows above, not a replacement for them.

Mostly unapproved and compounded. Evidence is thinner than everything above it on this list, and we’d rather you heard that from us.

Peptides in Tier 2 and Tier 3 are not FDA-approved for use in animals. Under FDA guidance, they may be compounded from bulk substances and dispensed for a specific non-food-producing animal patient when no approved alternative is suitable — and such preparations do not undergo FDA review for safety or effectiveness.

Are peptides safe for dogs and cats?

The peptides discussed here have generally shown favourable safety profiles in animal research, with few reported adverse effects. That said, “generally well tolerated in studies” is not the same as “proven safe for your pet.” Safety depends heavily on the right diagnosis, the right form, the right dose for body weight, and pharmaceutical-grade sourcing — which is exactly why every Happy Feet protocol runs through a licensed veterinarian. Cats in particular need individual review; copper-containing peptides such as GHK-Cu warrant extra caution in feline patients.

Is this FDA-approved?

Most of it is not, and we won’t pretend otherwise. A small number of peptide-class veterinary medicines have formal approval in certain markets. The rest are unapproved compounds that a veterinarian may prescribe off-label and have compounded for a specific patient when no approved alternative is suitable. Compounded preparations are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. Your vet will tell you exactly which tier your pet’s protocol falls into before anything is dispensed.

Will this replace my pet’s current medication?

No. Happy Feet is designed to sit alongside your veterinarian’s existing plan, not to displace it. Never stop a prescribed pain medication, anti-inflammatory or chronic disease treatment without talking to the vet who prescribed it. If your pet has an undiagnosed problem, the first step is diagnosis — not a peptide.

Why do you talk about options you don’t sell?

Because weight management, rehab, proven pain medication and — where it’s needed — surgery genuinely outperform us for a lot of pets, and a brand that hides that is a brand you shouldn’t trust with your dog. If the honest answer for your pet is “lose four kilos and see a rehab vet,” we’d rather say it and keep your trust than sell you a protocol that was never going to work.

How fast would we see anything?

It varies by pet, by goal and by protocol, and some pets don’t respond at all. Owners in tissue-repair protocols typically watch across a four-to-eight week window, with mobility goals often assessed over eight to twelve weeks. We build check-ins into the program specifically so a protocol that isn’t working gets stopped rather than quietly continued — and continued billing without benefit is the thing we’re most determined not to do.

Do you need my vet’s records?

Ideally yes. Recent bloodwork, imaging and a medication list make the consult far more useful and far safer — especially for seniors, cats, and any pet with kidney, liver, bleeding or cancer history. If you don’t have them, the consulting vet will tell you what to get first.

My cat seems fine — should I even be reading this?

Possibly, yes. Joint disease is strikingly common in older cats and strikingly rarely presented for, because cats don’t limp — they reroute. They take the chair instead of the counter, retire a favourite high shelf, or start missing the litter box because climbing into it hurts. If your cat is over ten and has quietly stopped doing something they used to do, mention it at the next check-up.
